Joseph Thomson

Born in Penpont in 1858, Joseph wanted one thing only, as he grew up; to become an Explorer on the African continent. So he studied zoology and botany at university, and prepared to achieve his dream. One of his ventures took him through the lands of the Maasai people in rural Kenya. To this day, he is highly regarded among the Maasai.
As we mark the 130th anniversary of his death, it is only fitting that we should pick up on his exploratory ways, and offer a cycle way in his homelands.
More information about this great man, at the Penpont Heritage Centre in Penpont (limited opening hours) and visit www.penpontheritage.co.uk
Meantime, put some oil on your bicycle chain and get ready to explore the landscapes and places where he grew up, and lies buried.
